Day 2 in Salo

First night in host homes… everyone’s experience was crazy different. David was barely awake (or rather was asleep) til 10:30… but thought it was 11:30 for quite awhile because Finland had their Spring Equinox time change last night at 3:00am. After that it was a lazy shower and a difficult avoidance of the tempting sauna that’s in almost every Finish household. Luckily he’d already done that in the hotel… everything it’s worked up to be and more. The sauna in Finland is a point of reverence and rightly so. It was hard to follow the 45 minute recommendation!

Well, while David was off in dream land, Liana was a little more earth-bound eating a very delicious breakfast consisting of fruits, toast, bacon, sausage, and vanilla tea, much more nutritious and delicious than her daily toasted ego waffle. After the satisfying breakfast David and Liana were off to a 3-hour rehearsal at the Finish school located about 5 minutes from her host home. This brings us to about where the group is now… we recently took a lengthy walk to the Salo sports center where we are bowling… or pooling as the Finish call it.

David is currently losing horribly at a game of bowling that puts American bowling clubs to shame with a well-kept pool room, snack bar, and bowling lounge that serves bowls full of interesting, salty licorice and alcoholic beverages to all those over the age of 18 (except American high-schoolers). The students and host kids are getting along well, the noisy cheers and jeers of strikes and spares are as chaotic as any all-American get-together.

Well it’s Liana’s turn to bowl, so this had better wind up. Europe is a frighteningly new place, but we’re being introduced to it in a well-organized fashion with still room for fun. After bowling, we’ll head back to the host houses where Finish traditions both new and familiar will end our first full day in Salo!
